Help

The supervisor serves as the direct liaison between the cooperating teacher, the school administration, the student teacher, and Graceland University.  Every supervisor will complete a similar set of evaluation forms for each student teacher candidate.  Either directly or through their student teacher candidate, they will contact you to let you know their schedule for observations.  They are required to observe and evaluate their student teacher at least every other week.  The supervisor serves in a variety of roles:

Communication

  • Clarifies expectations, procedures, routines, and requirements to the student teacher candidate and cooperating teacher
  • Responds to weekly student journals with helpful feedback

Consultant

  • Confers with student teacher and cooperating teacher following each observation
  • Provides suggestions to student teacher for planning, teaching, and management in the classroom setting
  • Assists the student teacher to develop effective goals and strategies
  • Guides the student teacher candidate to interpret experiences utilizing sound educational theory and practice

Advocate

  • Provides guidance and feedback to the student teacher candidate
  • Counsels the student teacher concerning professional and personal challenges

Evaluator

  • Assists the cooperating teacher to evaluate the progress of his/her student teacher
  • Addresses significant concerns by notifying the Director of Field Experience and developing an improvement plan with the student teacher and cooperating teacher
  • Completes InTASC and Disposition Evaluations
  • Conducts an exit interview with the student teacher, including his/her recommendation for final grade and licensure
  • Collects the cooperating teacher's evaluation packet and returns with his/her own paperwork to the Field Experience at the end of the student teaching period

Supervisor Observations

During observations, the supervisor will:

  • Observe an entire lesson and spend approximately one - two hours with the student teacher including post-observation feedback.
  • Watch the student teacher for approximately one hour gathering data and taking notes. During this time, he/she will review all lesson plans (not just the one for this lesson) and fill out the evaluation forms.  He/she will also check the student teacher's time sheet to help plan how to make up any days the teacher candidate might have missed. 
  • Meet with the cooperating teacher to ensure the student teacher's lesson plans are being monitored and approved. Listen to the cooperating teacher's perceptions of the student teacher and take notes on any problems. Share the evaluation forms with the cooperating teacher and discuss any differences in judgment. 
  • Meet with the student teacher and listen to his/her perceptions. Assist the student teacher to problem solve any difficulties that might be experienced.  Share the evaluation forms with the student teacher explaining the strengths and weaknesses observed.  If time does not permit for a conference at the school, the supervisor should arrange another meeting with the student or make contact by phone. 
  • It the schedule allows, the supervisor should meet with the cooperating teacher and student teacher together.
  • The supervisor may want to talk with the school principal and/or any other teacher who has worked with the student teacher. 
  • After the observation, the supervisor will document any problems that could prevent the student teacher from passing student teaching and discuss the situation with the Director of Teacher Education as soon as possible.
