If you are located in a building and it is possible to exit safely, follow these steps:

  • Exit the building as quickly as possible and away from the immediate path of danger.
  • Notify anyone you may encounter to exit immediately.
  • While exiting, do not run in a straight line. If possible, use walls, furniture or other objects to block you from the armed subject.
  • Once outside do not run in a straight line. Use trees, vehicles or other objects to block you from view.
  • When you are away from the immediate area of danger, summon help any way possible and warn others.
  • If communication is possible, call Lamoni Police, 911, and Dean of Students' office 641-784-5104, providing specific information on your location, the number of armed subjects and persons who may be involved, injuries, etc.
  • Proceed to rally points (golf cart sheds at Lamoni Public Golf Course, Baughman Building, Coliseum movie theatre or Sale Barn).

If you are located in a building and exiting the building is not possible, the following actions are recommended:

  • Go to the nearest room or office. Do not stay in an open hallway.
  • Close and lock the door.
  • Turn off the lights.
  • Barricade yourself in the room with furniture or anything else to secure the door.
  • Seek protective cover.
  • Break a window to escape if no secondary exit exists.
  • Keep quiet and act as if no one is in the room. Turn off or silence any electronic equipment that may make noise.
  • Do not answer the door.
  • If communication is possible from an on-campus phone, call Lamoni Police and/or 911.
  • Silence your mobile device.
  • Wait for the local Police to assist you out of the building.

If the shooter enters your classroom or work area:

  • Throw objects at the shooter to distract and disorient him/her.
  • Spill liquid on the floor to cause him/her to slip.
  • SWARM the intruder and subdue him/her.
  • Stand right beside the door so when he/she enters, you can quickly exit as he/she is entering.

If you are located outside a building and it appears that you can get away safely, follow these steps:

  • Run away from the threat as fast as you possibly can.
  • Do not run in a straight line. Use buildings, trees, vehicles or other
objects to block you from view.
  • When you are away from the immediate area of danger, summon help any way possible and warn others.
  • If communication is possible, call Lamoni Police, 911 or Dean of Students at 641-784-5104, providing specific information on your location, the number of armed subjects and persons who may be involved, injuries, etc.
  • Proceed to rally points (golf cart sheds at Lamoni Public Golf Course, Baughman Building, Coliseum movie theatre or Sale Barn).

If you are located outside a building and running away is not a safe option, consider one of the following recommendations:

  • Quickly assess the area and find a good place to hide.
  • If death or serious physical injury is being caused to others and you
are unable to run or hide, you can choose to play dead among the victims.
  • You can fight back. This is dangerous, but in some situations it might be the only option.
  • If you are caught by an armed subject and are not going to fight back, do not look your captor in the eyes and obey all commands.
  • Once the local Police arrives, follow their instructions.

What to expect from police officers:

  • Do not run up to them. Stay in your location and show your hands. Their first priority will be to find the assailant to stop any further shooting.
  • Give as accurate information as you have. Description of person (name if you know the person), apparel, gun, and any other details you remember.
  • Stay at the rally point until the all clear is given.

Other recommendations:

  • Minimize cell tower usage as much as possible so that emergency responders are able to communicate.
  • Do not flee in your vehicle when evacuating campus.
  • Confronting the active shooter could save other lives. Any distraction (making noise, spilling drinks on floor to make shooter slip, etc) will thwart the shooter’s plans and potentially lessen injuries.
  • Never touch the weapon with your bare hands. Use a garbage bag from a trash can or the actual trash can to contain weapons until police arrive.
